SUCHASANA The Pleasant Pose

SUCHASANA
The Pleasant Pose

By: Kostas Tselios

In Sanskrit, the word Sucha means ‘pleasure or comfort’. The
asana we are going to learn in this issue is called the pleasant or the
comfortable posture, which consists of sitting with your legs crossed.
In India, this asana is sometimes referred to as Suktasana, taking the name from the sukta tailors and their particular way of sitting while they
are sewing their beautiful saris.
I always encourage my new students to practice this posture as much as possible because it is ideal for pranayama, japa and meditation. Sitting in the Sukhasana position provides a firm base for the entire body and spine, keeping the energy centred and helping it to flow upwards.

HOW TO DO IT
Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of your body. Your spine must be erect but relaxed. Bend your right leg and place your foot under your left thigh, then bend your left leg and place your foot under your right thigh. Do this in such a manner that the calf of one of your legs comes above and rests upon the calf of the other.
Your knees should be as close as possible to the ground. Also, remember when you first start this asana not to over-stretch. Just let the weight of your legs slowly stretch themselves.
For beginners or students with stiff knees or hips, use a cushion or a folded blanket under your buttocks, to relieve tension on the lower back, as well as under the knees.
Keep your head, neck, shoulders and back straight and upright, but be sure that your entire body is totally relaxed. Your chin should be parallel to the ground.
You may find that you lean more to one side than the other, or back and forth. Concentrate to start with on your physical balance and equalizing the weight of your body. Place your hand on your knees, palms facing upwards or downwards or in any special hand mudra of your choice. Finally close your eyes and relax.

CHAKRA AWARENESS
Sukhasana is associated with the second chakra, the Svadhisthana, which manifests itself in many characteristics such as creativity, imagination, euphoria, emotion and intuitions. It is mostly related to desire, which could be desire about, sex, money or anything else in a materialistic or spiritual way.
Taste is also a crucial factor with this chakra. This is not only taste related to what we eat or drink at a physical level, but rather how tasteful and tactful we are in our lives.
While you are practicing Sukhasana, focus your attention on the point on your body which is approximately two fingers above your genital area. Do this in order to balance and make your energy flow better. This can help to purify any blockages at this point.

WHAT IS GOOD FOR
Sukhasana belongs to a group of asanas including Vajrasana, the diamond pose, mentioned in the last issue. Primarily these asanas are used because they facilitate the mental and physical balance, which is much needed, especially for the practice of meditation.
These asanas are also good for your spine, where most of your important energy flows upwards. This should remain straight and relaxed. This will help to remove any physical exhaustion or mental tiredness accumulated from your daily life activities.
By practicing this asana, your body will become more steady and your mind will be calmed down. When your body and mind are relaxed then you can engage in other yoga practices.
If harmony within your entire being is what you are looking for, this simple posture can be a real help, plus it is an easy posture to adopt.

MY EXPERIENCE
Everyone who practices Sukhasana for the first time tells me that they used to sit like that in the kindergarden or when they where kids.
I know I used to sit like this too, when I was at school. However, since then most of us have found that our bodies are stiffer, so it can be hard when you first start this asana on a regular basis.
Keep practicing the posture until you have mastered it, without any pain. It is very good at the beginning to try and sit properly on the bones of your buttocks.
You can always extend your legs and then resume the posture until it becomes easier for you to maintain it for a longer period.
Keep your heals at least a fist-length apart from your genitals and be sure that your legs are evenly placed.
Be constantly aware of your spine, keeping it straight and make sure your face muscles are relaxed.
As a final tip for today, I would recommend that you smile while undertaking this asana. This will make you look beautiful, as well as lifting your cheeks higher and making your nostrils wider, to inhale a bigger amount of air. You should end up looking and feeling better after practicing this posture for a while.
Until the next time, Om, Om Shiva Om Namo

VAJRASANA
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
In Sanskrit the word Vajra has two meanings Thunderbolt and diamond. Both words have a special meaning in the pantheon of Hinduism.
The diamond is an epithet which is associated with Siva, and that is for being strong and imperishable as a diamond as well as beeing created from light and is light giving.
Thunderbolt is the weapon of indra the chief of the gods, the god of thunder, lightning and rain. Both interpretations of this asana as diamont pose or thunderbolt pose have beein used in most styles of yoga, and the reason for that is Vajrasana has a variety of effects and benefits in a holistic level -mind body and spirit.Vajrasana, resemples the nimaz, the suffi pose for prayer, it is practised mostly by Bhuddist and especially the Zen order for their meditation practise. Furthermore Vajrasana it is the posture where many people around the worls and especially in Asia are using to have their meals, have a chat while they have their chai. Once an Indian friend told me that, The reason that nowdays you can see young Indians having a belly is for the fact they start using to seat on chairs whille eating. At the time I thought of that comment as a joke and I havent gave it a second thoughout but after while I realised how true was his remark.

HOW TO DO IT
Kneel with your knees slightly apart and place the big toes facing eachother in a distance of about five cm, then spread the heals so that the feet form the shape of a through, lower the buttocks slowly onto the inside surface of the feet with heels touching the sides of the hips, place the hands on the knees, palms down. Another style used for meditation is by placing the hands on the thighs in such a way that the thumb and the index finger of each hand encircle the top of the corresponding thigh. The thumbs must slightly point outward and the indexes touch the pelvis. The rest of the fingers have to be relaxed on the top of the thights, the spine must be kept absolutely straight , bear in mind that while you practise in order to avoid any excessive backward or forward arching .The shoulders and head should be kept without tension and face muscles should be relaxed, preferably with a radiand smile. Finaly expand the chest and shoulders, close your eyes, breath normaly and fix the attenion on the flow of air-prana the life force vitality, entering smouthouly in and out of the nostrils. Now as for how long you should practise, I would say as much as possible in order at the begining to get used to some pain in tne feet ancles and calves. Feel free at the beginning to use a folded blanket and placed under the buttocks, or have handy some coushions for under the calves, for added comfort and the pain gradually disapear.
WHAT IS GOOD FOR
Vajrasana alters the flow of blood and nervous impulses in the pelvic area, for that reason it is alleviating many problems related to womens menstrual cycle and menopause. It increases the efficiency of the digestive syste, and not only we digest better our foot, but can cure allignments such as hyperacidity and peptic ulcer.Overall the stomach will function with increased strength, vajrasana can be practiced after meals from five to half an hour, and I can promise, you will have a waist line wich you dream of.

Yoga

Hdg: THE VAJRASANA
Subhead: DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

In Sanskrit, the word Vajra has two meanings, Thunderbolt and diamond. Both words have a special meaning in the pantheon of Hinduism.
The diamond is an epithet which is associated with Siva. It represents strength and is, of course imperishable. Also, it is seen as light giving, because of the way it refracts light.

The thunderbolt is the weapon of indra, the chief of the gods, the god of thunder, lightning and rain.

This yoga asana (position) called Vajrasana can be interpreted by either of these symbols, diamond or thunderbolt. It is an asana that is used in most styles of yoga. This is because the Vajrasana has a variety of effects and benefits on a holistic level, benefiting mind, body and spirit.

The Vajrasana also resembles the nimaz, the ‘suffi’ pose for prayer. It is practised mostly by Bhuddist and Zen monks, as part of their meditation practise.

Furthermore, Vajrasana is the yoga posture that many people around the world, especially in Asia, use when they are eating, or when they are having a chat with friends while drinking their chai.

Once, a friend in India told me that the reason many Indians now have a large belly is because they no longer eat in this position, but instead use western-style chairs. At the time I thought that his comment was a joke and didn’t give it a second thought, but, having used the Vajrasana position regularly myself, when eating, I now think there is truth in what he was saying.

HOW TO DO THIS ASANA
Kneel on the floor with your knees slightly apart and place your big toes behind you so that they are facing each other, at a distance of about five cm.

Then, spread your heals so that your feet form the shape of a trough. Then lower your buttocks slowly onto the inside surface of your feet, with your heels touching the sides of your hips. Place your hands on your knees, palms down.

Another style, used for meditation, is to place your hands on your thighs in such a way that the thumb and index finger of each hand encircles the top of the corresponding thigh.

Your thumbs must slightly point outward and your index fingers should touch your pelvis. The rest of your fingers have to be relaxed on the top of your thighs and your spine must be kept absolutely straight.

Be careful to avoid any excessive backward or forward arching and your shoulders and head should be kept without tension and your face muscles should be relaxed, preferably with a radiant smile.

Finally, expand your chest and shoulders, close your eyes, breath normally and fix your attention on the flow of air (prana), the life force. Breath so that air is entering smoothly in and out of your nostrils.

As for how long you should practise, I would say as much as possible, but build up. At the beginning you will have to get used to some pain in your feet, ankles and calves. Feel free at the beginning to use a folded blanket, placed under your buttocks for support, or use small cushions for added comfort; the pain will gradually disappear as you get used to this asana.

WHAT IS THIS ASANA GOOD FOR?
Vajrasana alters the flow of blood and nervous impulses in the pelvic area. For that reason it is good at alleviating many problems related to women’s menstrual cycles and menopause.

It increases the efficiency of the digestive system. Not only does it help digestion, but it can even cure ailments such as hyperacidity and peptic ulcers.

Overall, the stomach will function with increased strength. Vajrasana can be practiced after meals from between five minutes to half an hour. I can promise you, do this and you will be on the way to having the waistline you have always dreamed of!

MY EXPERIENCES

Practising and teaching Vajrasana for quite a few years now, I am amazed for the plethora of benefits can offer.
For me it has become my standard position for, eating, writing and even watching TV.
I use this asana mostly for my meditation practice. If my feet and knees are very stiff, I find it hard to practice the Padmasana (lotus pose) so I use Vajrasana instead.
I fully recommend this asana for people with any sort of problems around their digestive and urinatory track. It has been proved to be preventive as well as theraupetic for most ailments related to these areas.
It is one of the asanas which I always include in my yoga classes, and strongly advise my students to practise it at home on their own.
Why not give it a try, I am sure you will feel the benefits!
Until next time.
